Smart For A Girl: Roar is the brainchild of creative collaborators Imogen Banks and Alice Bell designed to address the lack of opportunity for entry-level screenwriters in the television industry. The program is made possible by Screen Australia’s Gender Matters: Brilliant Careers initiative.
Smart For a Girl: Roar will teach twelve, uncredited, female writers how an idea is developed into series television through the processes of a writer’s room.
Successful applicants will be divided into four, separate groups where the selected idea will be brainstormed, and a first episode plotted.
Each of the four selected writers whose ideas were developed within the rooms will then go on to write the first episode to a polished second draft, with the process of notes and re-drafting open to the observation of each relevant group.
Imogen Banks and Alice Bell’s television collaborations include the much-loved Puberty Blues for Network Ten and critically acclaimed The Beautiful Lie. Imogen Banks is an award-winning producer whose credits include The Beautiful Lie, Puberty Blues, Offspring, Tangle and Dangerous. Alice’s writing credits include The Beautiful Lie, Puberty Blues, The Slap, Spirited and Rush. Alice is also a screenwriting mentor and script producer.
Applicants must be female and an Australian citizen or permanent resident and have no produced credits as a screenwriter in television in any country. For the avoidance of doubt, a credit means a half hour or full hour of television; short films, web series, books, articles, blogs, do not count as credits in this context.
We are looking for the next generation of female writers, who are passionate about storytelling and have something to say.
