Miranda Tapsell and Luke McGregor host Portrait Artist of the Year

ABC is thrilled to announce that award winning actor Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires, Top End Wedding) and beloved comedian Luke McGregor (Rosehaven, The Weekly) are hosting Portrait Artist of the Year – a brand-new, eight-part competition series celebrating one of the most accessible and provocative forms of art: the portrait.

For the first time, amateur and professional artists go head-to-head in Portrait Artist of the Year, competing for the ultimate prize: a life-changing commission to hang in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

In each episode, nine artists, from emerging talents to established professionals, have just four hours to create a portrait of a well-known celebrity. Their work is then judged by three esteemed Australian art experts: Director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, Bree Pickering; award winning, multi-disciplinary artist, Abdul Abdullah; and Associate Professor of Art History at the Australian National University (ANU), Robert Wellington.

Both Miranda and Luke share a passion for portraiture and know that every great painting tells a story. Together, they guide viewers through the creativity, surprises and magic that unfold with every brushstroke.

“Art makes people reflect on who they are and what to become. Nothing brings out empathy more than someone putting their heart on canvas. What I love most about this series is how it shows that art doesn’t divide, it unites. The artists are incredibly talented, and their portraits far exceed anything I could have imagined,” Miranda Tapsell said.

“My favourite part of filming this series (other than working with Miranda Tapsell) was seeing the sitters’ reaction to the artists’ portraits: joy, tears, shock – seeing themselves in a way they never have before.

Sitting for hours while people paint you is daunting – even our guests who are used to being on camera felt more vulnerable than usual – but the reveal was always magical, as was the bond that formed between the artists and their subject. I loved being a part of this show,” Luke McGregor said.

“Audiences are going to love Portrait Artist of the Year which bursts with creativity and uncovers extraordinary talent – artists of every age, style and background from across Australia. Joyous, inspiring, and full of heart, this is an art show for everyone," said Kath Earle, Head Arts, Music and Events.

Third Time’s The Charm! Laura Sharrad Wins MasterChef Australia: Back To Win 2025.

Laura Sharrad has been crowned the winner of MasterChef Australia: Back To Win 2025, taking home the $250,000 cash prize, and the title that she's dreamed of since she was 13 years old.

Having made it to the Grand Finale in both Season 6 and Season 12, but narrowly missing out on the top prize, Laura embodied the spirit of this season and was truly Back to Win.

Laura said: “Being part of MasterChef Australia has been life changing. It’s such a full circle moment to set myself a goal at such a young age and then finally achieve it after not giving up – it’s an incredible feeling.

“This season, I feel like I went back as a completely different person from the seasons before. And to win, having my parents, my husband Max, and my daughter Florence there, was a very special moment.”

With the finalists’ families and Season 17 alumni watching on, the Grand Finale comprised two rounds. The first saw Laura and fellow finalist Callum Hann cook with a series of classic flavour pairings, but in an unprecedented twist, both chefs received the same score from the judges in round one: 38 out of a total 40 points.

Heading into the second round, a pressure test set by renowned pastry chef Miko Aspiras, Laura and Callum had just four-and-a-half hours to recreate his Botanical Garden, a jaw-dropping bouquet of petits fours.

Laura's nearly identical replica of Miko’s Botanical Garden earned her 42 out of a possible 50 points in the second round, and a total of 80 points, scoring her the win by seven points. Finally, Laura was able to hold the trophy high and declare herself a MasterChef champion.

Laura said: “I think things happen at the right time and for the right reasons. Whether you’ve applied once or four times, or you don’t win and get the opportunity to come back, keep striving for that goal because MasterChef really does change your life.

“I think the more people who can experience that magic, the better the world will be.”
